Job Script of a Food and Beverage Instructor:

The Food and Beverage Instructor is responsible for teaching high school students and adults in vocational education programs focused on food preparation, safety, and service. Instruction is delivered in-person, virtually, or through a combination of both. The instructor will utilize a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, demonstrations, field trips, and technology-based tools.
The role includes developing and revising curriculum, maintaining classroom and student records, ordering supplies, and preparing progress reports. The instructor will model and demonstrate proper cooking techniques, food safety practices, and sanitation standards, while promoting accuracy, neatness, efficiency, and professionalism in the workplace.
The position requires building relationships with employers to align curriculum with industry needs and to create opportunities for internships, apprenticeships, and on-the-job training. The instructor must remain current in industry practices and instructional methods through professional development and maintain compliance with the Health Department, OSHA, and safety standards.


Duties and Responsibilities of a Food and Beverage Instructor:
  • Teach students fundamental cooking techniques, food safety, and kitchen sanitation.
  • Deliver instruction in classroom, online, and laboratory environments using a variety of teaching tools and methods.
  • Demonstrate safe operation and maintenance of kitchen tools and equipment.
  • Develop, revise, and implement curriculum, lesson plans, syllabi, and instructional materials aligned with industry standards.
  • Evaluate and assess student performance through grading, observation, and progress reports.
  • Maintain classroom discipline and enforce safety and sanitation protocols.
  • Organize field trips, guest speakers, and events to enhance student learning and showcase achievements.
  • Maintain accurate records, including attendance, progress tracking, and follow-ups with program completers.
  • Monitor inventory, order supplies, and ensure proper food storage.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with employers to provide students with internship, apprenticeship, and OJT opportunities.
  • Support student recruitment and stay informed about labor market trends and employment opportunities.
  • Attend workshops and conferences to remain current on teaching methods and food and beverage industry practices.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned; some travel may be required.

 
Minimum Qualifications of a Food and Beverage Instructor:
 
  • Four (4) years of experience in the food and beverage industry and the ability to obtain a Career and Technical Education (CTE) endorsement 580 or 598 once hired. Or two (2) years of experience in the food and beverage industry, an associate’s degree and the ability to obtain a CTE endorsement of 580 or 598 once hired.
  • Career and Technical Education (CTE) endorsement (598) OR a teaching license with two (2) years of vocational experience and a 598 CTE endorsement.
  • Knowledge of food preparation techniques, food safety, sanitation, and Health Department standards.
  • Knowledge of tools, equipment, and operations common to the food and beverage industry.
  • Knowledge of computer applications, including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to apply math skills for recipe conversions and portion control.
  • Ability to prepare lesson plans and instructional materials, and to integrate technology into instruction.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with students, staff, supervisors, and employers.
  • Ability to maintain discipline and a safe, orderly learning environment in compliance with OSHA standards.
  • Ability to evaluate student performance, provide constructive feedback, and track progress.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage responsibilities in a dynamic instructional setting.
  • ServSafe Certification, CPR/First Aid Certification, and OSHA Safety Training required (or ability to obtain).
